International Literacy Day September 8

Our International Literacy Day September 8 initiative Random Acts of Reading is gaining momentum and may rival the launch of the Rugby World Cup! Activities could include:
- a group of twenty people reading together in a park or public place
- an improv event depicting favourite book plots
- a recital in a city square or railway station
- leaving free reading material on park benches for others to share (Travelling Books)
- giving out free newspapers on the street

Anyone who is interested in promoting reading or literacy, can register their idea or activity on our facebook page and then send us photos or video of the event to share on the page.

Dear colleagues

I am seeking participants in a research project I am currently undertaking in New Zealand and England. The aim of the research is to explore the changing nature of the adult educator’s role, against the background of changing international and national policy on adult education and lifelong learning. I am a keen to hear from people who regard themselves to be adult education practitioners/community educators, whether in a paid or voluntary capacity or whether in a non-formal, community or institutional context.

The areas I am interested in exploring include:
1 The careers of adult educators: what kind of training they underwent and their past and current roles in adult education
2 Motivations for becoming an adult educator and the philosophy/values which guide adult educators’ work
3 The ways in which adult educators’ work and practice have changed over time
4 How local, national and international policies impact on adult educators’ work
5 The challenges and opportunities which adult educators see facing adult education in the next decade or so.

I would like to interview adult educators who are currently working, or have recently retired from that role. I am happy to gather information via face-to-face, telephone or Skype interviews, or by email correspondence, whichever is mutually convenient. I anticipate interviews will take 30 minutes to hour. All data will be anonymised.

If you would be willing to participate, please get in touch with me. I would also be grateful if you could pass this on to others whom you feel might be interested in participating in the research

MATARIKI ACOUSTIC SOUL 2011
Come celebrate good music and food at this years Papakura Matariki Celebrations.
Acoustic Soul is in it’s third year and has seen past acts such as, Maisey Rika, Ria Hall, Nat Rose, Pikiteora Mura Hita to name a few, and also up and coming Aotearoa artists who have graced the stage of the Papakura Hawkins Theatre, celebrating the love of music through the eyes of Matariki. Acoustic Soul will be the final event closing off the 2011 Matariki celebrations for Papakura and Auckland City.

Date: Saturday 9th July 2011
Time: Doors open 6pm show starts 7 till 9.30pm
Venue: Hawkins Theater – 13 Ray Small Drive – Papakura

Abbas Nazari came to New Zealand from Afghanistan as a child and had only been learning English for six years when he became second runner up in the New Zealand Vegemite Spelling Bee. Te Papa has produced a short interview with Abbas about his experience which can found under our ACEnet ‘embedding Literacy and Numeracy’. Read more about him and his experiences here.

ACEnet Resource of the Week – 2-6 May 2011
This week we highlight the upcoming 2011 South Auckland Pacific Arts summit starting on 4th May. This is a platform to encourage emerging artists to learn from those more established. Scroll down their excellent blogsite to learn how the various artists came to be included in this huge event. Look for Daren Kamali, poet, youth worker and musician, who is completing a Creative Writing Diploma at Manukau Institute of Technology. His is only one of the stories here that demonstrate links and the progression from lifelong learning opportunities to practices such as writing books, participating in performance art and the sharing of knowledge. Further down the page is information about their Pecha Kucha night on 4th May – “Pecha Kucha Boom Bahng”!
